Honestly, I believe that the church pushes marriage on people because they think it is the only protection from being promiscuous.

And being promiscuous in marriage is better? Man himself can not change the state of one's heart, no matter what institutions he enters into. I've heard this one before, and from some very influential figures in the evangelistic circles. R. Albert Mohler even claimed once that living in a state of singleness is a sin (as well as choosing not to procreate in marriage).

The church is nothing different than the world when it comes to these matters. They preach against homosexual marriage crying about "protecting the sanctity of marriage", while at the same time causing much more destruction to the sanctity of marriage by their promiscuity, fornication, and adultery and acceptance of those things. Quite hypocritical.

Depressing is hearing a friend describe how after working to put his "Christian" wife through college (including a few womens' studies courses) she comes home and informs him that he will quit his job and become a househusband. When he objects, she informs him that he has no choice or she will divorce him and he will never see his daughter again (knowing the custody laws favor her)

I'd just like to say that as a feminist, I support equality under the law. The pendulum has gone too far in the other direction: courts used to award custody to the father most of the time, because he could afford to take care of the children. There's now more concern about who is the "primary caregiver," never mind that providing material needs is also a form of giving care! I wonder what would happen if men fought for custody more often. I remember reading that in most of the cases where custody is awarded to the mother, the father did not ask for it - though I'd have to go hunting for specific numbers and the date of the study.

A friend who is a divorce lawyer told me that most men want to fight for custody, but are usually advised that it will do little good except run up the legal fees. He said many judges actually get mad at men who try to contest custody and will punish them with more punitive child support or alimony payments. Finally he told me of one guy that when he indicated that he would contest custody, his wife said she would make false allegations for domestic violence. Since men are often convicted of DV with little or no evidence, the father was scared out of pursuing custody.

I think we would do well to say that Church should promote marriage because it's the God-given from of sex, and depriving people of it will result in promiscuity.

Marriage isn't some new-fangled tactic that we came up with to keep people from having illegitimate children-- It's the natural state that people should occupy.

That SOME people should occupy, not every person. That is the issue for single people in church, the church thinks that singleness is wrong when clearly the Bible says that it isn't.

People without a spouse is also a natural state. It's hard to live without food, water, sleep, or protection from the natural elements. Can't say the same for marriage or sex though.
